10 Holiday Gift Ideas for Veterinary Students

It’s that time of the year where you’re frantically wondering what to get the veterinary student in your family for the holidays. You may feel like they have been MIA for the last few years, but trust me, they have a good reason to be. Veterinary school is demanding, time-consuming, and emotionally challenging. Here are ten gift ideas that may brighten the spirit of your veterinary student.

1) Scrubs

  • You can never go wrong with gifting someone a new set of scrubs. Scrubs become an all-purpose outfit during veterinary school. Students wear scrubs to lectures, labs, clinics, and even the gym. *Make sure the school that they attend does not require a specific color. Most schools don’t, but some do.

Here are a couple of my favorite brands:

Figs

MedCouture

Cherokee Uniforms

2) AirPods Pro

  • Not the cheapest gift, but it’s an excellent investment. These new AirPods by Apple offer noise-canceling capabilities which can come in handy as your student studies. They can be used while going on a run, in the library, in the car, and much more. A gift that would make any student happy! Be the cool aunt, uncle, or parent and get your student a set of these!

3) Starbucks Giftcard

  • Most students start their day off with coffee. Why not gift them with a large (more than $20) gift card from Starbucks or your local coffee shop? If your student is like me, they often study at coffee shops, so a gift card would come in handy and not break their student budget.

4) Textbooks

  • Not the most fun gift idea, but one that your student will be thankful for. Textbooks typically range from $80-250, so if you can find out which books they need, gifting them with one or two would be awesome. But I strongly urge you to make sure they need them before purchasing one.

Some typical textbooks that students like are:

Merk Veterinary Manual

Blackwells Five Minute Veterinary Consult

Veterinary Internal Medicine 2 Volumes

5) Stethoscope

  • If you have a veterinary student that is just starting school or one that is about to begin clinics, this may be the perfect gift for them! There are many styles of stethoscopes out there, and they can even be personalized. Find out if your student has or needs a stethoscope.

Here are two companies that I like:

Littmann

Eko Health

6) Suture Set

  • A suture set is a fun gift idea that will come in handy as your student begins learning suture patterns. This gift can be used at all stages of veterinary school. As a fourth-year student, I have found myself having to go back and review my suture patterns. A suture set like this has come in handy!

7) Hydro Flask Water Bottle

  • Reusable water bottles are fantastic! Most students that I see on campus have one. Students often personalize theirs with stickers. A hydro flask is a great stocking stuffer this year!

8) Personalized Planner

  • All students need help getting organized. Although I am not a fan of written planners (I like using electronic ones), a lot of students love personalized planners. There are many customized planners out there. Research them and find one that may fit your veterinary student!

9) Event Tickets

  • Find an event that will require the student to get out of the house or library and have fun for a night. A concert, musical, play, art show, or amusement park would make for a great day/night out!

10) Money

  • I’m never a fan of just handing out cash, but it’s also aways a safe choice. There are a lot of things students need, but it may not always be easy to figure that out. Giving your student money allows them to buy whatever they think is important to them. Of course, you can still do this in creative ways by giving them lots of different gift cards (food, clothes, Visa, etc.)… or you can hand them cash!
